The Kindness of Strangers: How a Gentleman I Barely Knew Helped Me Obtain the Position That Changed My Life

During the closing decade of the 80s, I was beginning a backpacking trip to Europe with a travel partner. Since my companion was interested in enrolling in graduate studies in the Big Apple, we had booked a two-week stay there on the way to London.

We got to the student accommodation, a big ten-floor structure on the Upper West Side called International House. After dropping our bags, we made our way to the canteen, where we got some food, sat down, and started talking to other diners.

Sitting next to me was an individual of Iraqi origin studying engineering at an Ivy League institution. He asked me what I did, and I explained that I had just graduated with a degree in science and had been performing experiments with electron microscopy.

He noted that there was an research lab at the institution – right next door to the engineering faculty, which was why he was aware of it. He proposed that I consider applying for a role with them. I dismissed the idea, saying that I was about to fly to Europe and, additionally, I didn’t have a US visa.

The following day I went out exploring, going back to the cafeteria that night. The Iraqi student walked over to me and told me that he had organized a discussion for me with the head of the electron microscope unit at Columbia. Given that he had gone to the trouble, I went to the meeting – but straight off explained to my prospective employer that I lacked the necessary visa, so I was unable to accept the role.

Reflecting the city's spirit – a metropolis where opportunities abound – she responded: “We'll handle it. How soon can you begin?” I missed my plane to London.

I was employed there for three years. One of the benefits was that I got no-cost classes at Columbia, and I seized the chance to finish a postgrad program in international relations.

We didn't cross paths after that and I don’t even know his full name, but his remarkable generosity changed my life in so many ways. I lacked the bravery or self-assurance to contact anyone at an elite institution and seek a position. And, I had consistently hoped to take classes in another country, but could never have afforded it without that educational benefit.

Critically, that job in New York resulted in a position in Switzerland where I met my wonderful partner, with whom I am raising four wonderful sons and daughters. That encounter altered everything. That helpful person redirected my path in life, and I’m eternally thankful.
