"Any idea when you're interviewing the Haim sisters?" a message arrives. "I was hoping to ask if I can be their fourth member."

However, there remains one problem: I also desires to be the Haims' fourth member. What's more, we are in plentiful company. Multiple celebrated supporters have publicly begged for the role.

One thing is obvious something is at play. The siblings Este, Danielle and Alana started their career playing gigs at small eateries with their parents. Now they're multi-time Grammy hopefuls.

Like all the best groups, they're a close trio. Their music videos often depict them walking in sync down the streets of Los Angeles. In concert, they jam with such pure happiness you can't help but think, "I want to be involved in that, too."

"The amount of times on tour that young girls approached us and said, 'Watching you live, I bought a guitar'," states Alana, the most junior of the Haim siblings. "That is the ultimate compliment. It is a prize in itself. We have succeeded if we can inspire young girls to make music."

"And thus all are welcome to be the fourth Haim sister."

Award Milestone

The band have called into their homes, where they're taking a pause after an extensive tour in promoting their new album, I Quit.

They're currently reeling from the news it's been nominated for best rock album at the Grammy Awards – with Haim the very first all-woman band ever in the running for the trophy.

"I follow the lists every year, so it kind of feels like a surreal movie when your name is read out," explains Alana. "I needed to phone my sisters to say, 'Did we just hear this correctly or am I imagining things'?"

The importance of the honor is deeply felt by the band.

"We truly set out to make a rock album this time, so it's a huge milestone," continues Alana. "But we're just appreciative for the women that came before us."

Heartbreak and Laughter

The record was born from a period of personal change. All three sisters found themselves single, and the music inhabits that odd liminal space where you're happy to be free, but not entirely ready to move on.

The words follow breakups and partings. The sisters desire love, but not the relationships they've had. You can hear them working out in real time who they are becoming.

"I adore summary, yes," says Danielle. "I Quit is essentially a personal statement. You have to actively work on ignoring the noise and saying, 'I couldn't care less what people think'."

Evolution of Music

That recent confidence demanded a different sonic direction – more organic and direct than anything the band had done before.

For Danielle, who co-produced the album, that began with the percussion.

"The drum sound is such a nuanced thing, and I care so much about it," she emphasizes.

"'Journey of the drum sound' will be the title of our biography," jokes Alana. "I've said it, our albums don't start until we find the ideal drum sound."

Stories and Collective Humor

The trio's honesty inspired the album's rollout, where the sisters disclosed some of their dating tales.

A former partner left Este over a health consideration. Alana shared a story of flying to celebrate New Year's Eve with someone, only to receive a high five at midnight.

"Experiencing these breakups, you just feel like there's no light," notes Alana. "Thus to be able to find humor in those stories and have them tell you wilder stories, it's therapeutic."

A Confident Future

One can easily sense a shift in the band. Now, Haim are more certain of their position in the rock pantheon.

They're major draws, with hit albums and an worldwide fan base.

However Haim will consistently be their number one priority.

"My sisters and I have been playing music since I was four," concludes Alana. "It's like no other path that we were destined for. And I'm really fortunate we've gotten here and we're still kicking."
