The Trump phenomenon's most illuminating and characteristic instances – not its most crucial, nor cruelest, nor most threatening, nor most senseless, but perhaps its most illuminating – came earlier this autumn. In the course of multiple weeks, the American president began displaying the public his intentions for an ornate dance hall twice the size than the White House and then began unilaterally ripping down the eastern section to build it.
He has done things 10,000 times as bad – the existing assessment of deaths due to his slashing to international aid is 600,000 and increasing, and recently an analysis projected his petroleum strategies would kill another 1.3 million. However nothing as distinctive. No former leader would have dared – really, no former commander would have imagined – unilaterally destroying large sections of the presidential residence in order to erect a palace-inspired entertainment space, with the active collaboration of some of America's wealthiest, almost all of whom maintain dealings with public institutions.

As confusing as it is to observe the leader seek to颠覆 the old idea about democracy and substitute it with its polar opposite, there exists a significant segment among Americans who should not find it entirely new. This includes individuals like us – in older age cohorts close to half – who were raised within mainstream Protestant traditions.
We have observed over the years as rightwing evangelical churches turned the Jesus we were raised with into exactly the opposite of who we understood him to be. Fundamentally, they converted a persona of affection into a symbol of animosity who endorses specifically the brutality that he condemned in biblical teachings; this has happened more gradually, over decades as opposed to months, but it is nonetheless disturbing via comparable methods, a bewildering emotional blow for countless people.
A Harmful Christianity Takes Hold
So let me first describe the Jesus from my upbringing, since in theory Christ is the focus of any Christian faith, and because the rapidly expanding group among Americans might have little sense of him since they are non-believers or uncertain individuals or spiritual independents. I have no problem with these various perspectives, nor with any other faith; yet I maintain that exist valuable insights of substantial value in biblical accounts.
It is unquestionably absolutely not the story of a mighty king emerging; instead, a child comes into the world to homeless parents in an automotive shelter, who must quickly flee to another nation to avoid covert authorities. The baby grows up in modest conditions, a laboring woodworker; his doctrine is about love for other people, specifically for the impoverished – not simply tender feelings, but a concrete one, shown by providing food and housing. The Savior's reaction to violence is to offer the additional cheek – not as a demonstration of compliant endurance, but as a means to instruct the aggressor; his method regarding offenses is that if a person pilfers your coat you should give them your pullover also.
The evident and direct reality that the Jesus from scripture calls for a kind of profound affection centered on the impoverished has perpetually caused Christianity somewhat of a scandalous religion: attractive to the general public, but owing to its inherent radicalness needing to be contained. In the fifties it was restrained by dilution – Protestantism was so dominant that it essentially sanctified existing conditions.
A Battle for the Best Within Us
Hence I have become encouraged to observe the steadfast resistance against Trump emerge in this past year. It has served as significant comfort to assist in constructing the initiative that has taken to the streets in rally after rally, and likely has encouraged voters to show up in large quantities during minor elections. We will need to maintain it, and with identical determination, featuring US banners during all protests and appeals to the finest aspects in US history.
